Star Wars helped Adam Driver overcome one of his biggest fears: watching himself onscreen.
Driver, who plays Star Wars: The Force Awakens super villain Kilo Ren, made the decision never to review his own work after seeing himself in the pilot episode of Girls.
"Because I saw all the mistakes. The things that I wished I could change, but I couldn't because it's permanent," he revealed on The Howard Stern Show Tuesday.
"Plus, I came from a theater background where you don't get to see it," he continued. "And that's fine, like I know how it feels I guess, so I wasn't so interested in how it looked. I'd want to make it better looking or kind of perfect, and that's a trap."
But when it came to Star Wars, Driver decided he could make an exception.
"Because we did so much work on it ... It kind of seemed like I should just try getting over it," he said, adding, "And it's Star Wars. I can't literally believe that I was in it."
Driver conquered his fears last week at a private screening session with Carrie Fisher, who plays Princess Leia, and Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey.
Asked if watching himself was the painful, frustrating experience he thought it would be, Driver laughed, "Yeah ... I want to control it more and that's not really I feel conducive maybe to acting."
- It's tricky, because in order to get better you need to be aware of the things that you need to change. But by becoming very aware of those things you end up with other issues.
