Asking / instructing others to do something

  • The instructions should have a caring / deferential tone.
  • It should be explained why the person should follow that instruction.

Examples

  • Examples of instructions that could be improved:
    •  From a race registration website:
      • *Pre-Event (Friday) Packet Pick-up is mandatory. If you are unable to attend the Friday packet pick-up there is a $5 cash only fee to pick up on race day. You can pre-pay for race day pick-up here and pay by credit card.
        • I think "is mandatory." is a bit formal and final; I wouldn't talk to my friend like that.
  • Examples of instructions that show a better-than-average use of these techniques:
    • The Frankfurt police were very patient / caring with the English fans: "Please don't jump from the bridge; it's dangerous!"
      • This tone won't always be appropriate, depending on the situation.
