I recommend the book _Who's Hiring Who?_ by Richard Lathrop. It's fairly old (revised in the 1980s) but mostly still applicable. He suggests informational interviews, where you arrange to meet with someone at the company to learn about them. And he has an alternative resume/CV format called a Qualifications Brief, I used to follow that back when I needed one.
