Interesting / unusual voices seem to do better:

Examples:
- Young Folks by Peter Bjorn & John
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Home - The woman in the song has a very unusual voice.
Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Questions:
Q: How can a person make their voice interesting without sounding ridiculous?
A: One trick that's been done over and over again is to listen to recordings of people in the past, or to go to unusual parts of the world, and use those voices (or a modified form of them). Examples: Heath Ledger's Joker voice was based on the voice of Tom Waits, a weird guy from the '70s; the main guy's voice in "There Will Be Blood" was based on an actor from the previous generation (~ the '50s); the voice for the main guy in "No Country For Old Men" was based on a real guy that the actor found in Texas.
